Speech and Language

Communication is used to the exchange of ideas between individuals. Communication is essential for the individuals interaction with its surroundings.
Poor communication skills will therefor have an impact on the individuals: educational, employability and behavior. This can therefore later on, affect the individual´s mental health, and due to statistics end with crime.

What does it take to communicate?
James Law, see communication through an external and internal perspective. The external is the explicit communication, which can either be a verbal or physical communication, as it will enable the individual to express what he means to say.

James Law, also mentions an internal communication, which is also known as inner speech, and is a key aspect of Vygotsky´s socio cultural perspective. The inner speech refers to the language the individual use for planning and thinking. According to Vygotsky´s theory, this inner speech/private speech, is the foundation for an individual´s social competencies.
I therefore find a great importance in distinguishing between an inner and external communication, in the matter of pupils with speech and language difficulties.

But if external and there as social skills, is bound by the foundation of inner speech, how do we improve the inner speech?
According to the german system theoretic Niklas Luhmann, two systems (individuals), can not communicate directly.

The systems is autopoietically closed, which means the system is self-creating. In that matter the communication between two systems, will only occur by a delivered disturbance from one system to another. In this view, communication is therefore described as a personal-reception. The personal-reception will occur, from the systems analysis, of the transmitting system´s disturbance.

I therefore believe that we need to affect the inner speech, by starting with analysing the individual´s personal-reception.
By analysing the inner speech, we can learn and try to understand the inner language of the individual, and by this understand the external language.
This view require that every person has some level of inner speech, which is my belief.
We just need to use the right strategy, to analyse and describe it.
